GS1 Egypt is enabling the Egyptian Healthcare industry to launch a national traceability program to fight counterfeiting, improve the pharmaceutical supply chain, and ensure the “safety & security of the Egyptian patient”.
Between all the industries that GS1 Egypt serves, healthcare is among its highest priorities in terms of consistent supply chain quality and accuracy. Medicine is all about helping the right patients get the right treatments, in the right doses, the right ways and at the right times. GS1’s global standards and traceability solutions bridge vital gaps between hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, medical device manufacturers and providers, transporters and much more to reduce human error and improve overall healthcare quality.
Throughout its years of operation in Egypt, GS1 has made massive strides in terms of unifying Egypt’s healthcare capabilities, teaming up with the Egyptian Ministry of Health in 2016 to launch Safemed – the nation’s first pharmaceutical catalog. Using Global Location Numbers solution, GS1 allows the healthcare industry to make use of its unique identification numbers to identify their locations, their corporate entities, their legal and functional entities and to inform trade partners about relevant companies and their corresponding GLN information.
This has allowed GS1 Egypt to:
The Egyptian MOH mandates the use of GS1 DataMatrix standards as a first step to implement a national traceability program.
The new traceability program that is based on GS1 DataMatrix barcode will allow every stakeholder in the pharmaceutical sector to save money in the long run and to have a better visibility for its products over the internet.
The MOH legislation will require each pharmaceutical product to be identified on secondary package with GS1 Global Trade Item Number (GTIN), Batch Number, Expire Date, and serial number). MOH specified GS1 DataMatrix to be the data carrier for the required data.
This project will enable Egypt to become a global leader in the provision of pharmaceutical supply chain that fights counterfeiting for the sake of patient safety. To achieve this, GS1 standards must be printed on every secondary pharmaceutical package across all production lines.

The healthcare stakeholders expressed their strong support in the adoption of GS1 as the global standard best suited for their industry.
60 global healthcare leaders have already endorsed the GS1 healthcare standards.
Implementing global standards across the entire healthcare supply chain could save 22,000-43,000 lives and avert 0.7 to 1.4 million patient disabilities. This is according to a report report that was written by McKinsey called “Strength in unity: The promise of global standards in healthcare”, the report is based on interviews with 80 thought leaders in the healthcare industry.

Abstract:
-The healthcare sector in Egypt is a major part of the economy, as there are about 10,000 types of pharmaceutical products manufactured in Egypt and exported to many countries all over the world.
-The healthcare industry around the globe is facing challenges that affect the entire supply chain, from manufacturers through to distributors, healthcare providers and patients. Everyone is concerned primarily with two main issues: increasing supply chain efficiency and more importantly, ensuring patient safety.
-In Egypt, we are mainly focusing on pharmaceuticals as there are many challenges when trying to ensure the right drug reaches the final point of dispense, since the counterfeit of drugs has been a serious problem.
-The pharmaceutical supply chain in Egypt consists of: manufacturers, distributors, hospitals and retail pharmacies, and finally, the patient. There are more than 400 pharmaceutical factories, 500 distributors, and 60,000 pharmacies in Egypt.
-The regulatory landscape continues to evolve and new regulations are being passed all the time. This has a direct impact on the pharmaceutical supply chain, requiring stakeholders to implement more accurate and advance identification technology and traceability systems to improve patient safety.
