The Electronic Product Code (EPC) is a unique identification (ID) code — the ‘next generation standard barcode.’ EPC uses a numerical system for product ID, but its capabilities are much greater. An EPC is actually a number that can be associated with specific product information, such as date-of-manufacture, origin and destination-of-shipment — hugely advantageous for enterprises and consumers. By encoding them into Radio-frequency Identification (RFID) tags, EPCs utilize the same GS1 IDs that are in today’s barcodes.
