UPA President Decrees Use of GTIN Barcode for Products

The President of the Egyptian Authority for Unified Procurement, Medical Supply and the Management of Medical Technology (UPA) issued decree no. 9 on 23 February 2022. The decree mandates all the authority’s suppliers use the Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) within a maximum period of two months, starting 1 April 2022.

The aim is to achieve a standardized barcode process across all government healthcare service providers.

This decree is in line with Egypt’s efforts to enhance governance, performance comprehensiveness, and trade standardization. It also comes in adherence to international standards for medications and medical supplies, ensuring their quality and the trustworthiness of their sources.

Major General Dr. Bahaa al-Din Zeidan, President of the UPA, issued decree no. 9 of 2022. 

This decree applies to all entities working with:

  • The UPA
  • Medical Supply and the Management of Medical Technology

The aim is to unify all medical transactions under an international standard code generation system.
