GS1 Egypt is enabling the Egyptian Healthcare industry to launch a national traceability program to fight counterfeiting, improve the pharmaceutical supply chain, and ensure the “safety & security of the Egyptian patient".

The Egyptian MOH mandates the use of GS1 DataMatrix standards as a first step to implement a national traceability program.

The new traceability program that is based on GS1 DataMatrix barcode will allow every stakeholder in the pharmaceutical sector to save money in the long run and to have a better visibility for its products over the internet.

The MOH legislation will require each pharmaceutical product to be identified on secondary package with GS1 Global Trade Item Number (GTIN), Batch Number, Expire Date, and serial number). MOH specified GS1 DataMatrix to be the data carrier for the required data.

This project will enable Egypt to become a global leader in the provision of pharmaceutical supply chain that fights counterfeiting for the sake of patient safety. To achieve this, GS1 standards must be printed on every secondary pharmaceutical package across all production lines.
