GS1 Egypt

On July 9, GS1 Egypt, the leading global non-profit organization specializing in healthcare technology standards, signed a cooperation protocol with the Unified Procurement Authority (UPA), an Egyptian organization affiliated to the Presidency of the Council of Ministers. This partnership aims to strengthen the UPA’s efforts in implementing the drug tracking system.

This protocol aims to integrate GS1 Global’s tracking solutions, including the Track and Trace solution, into Egypt’s pharmaceutical supply chain.

The goal is to ensure the quality of medicines and enhance patient safety by enabling all supply chain partners to track the movement of medicines from their origin to the final consumer.

GS1’s Track & Trace solution

The GS1 Track & Trace solution is fundamental to product tracking systems in 48 countries worldwide. This service uses GS1 standards, including Global Trade Item Numbers (GTINs) and Global Location Numbers (GLNs), to uniquely identify products and their locations.

This agreement aims to integrate GS1’s global traceability solutions, including Electronic Product Code Information Services (EPCIS), into Egypt’s pharmaceutical supply chain=.

EPCIS serves as a common language that connects different companies’ systems with those of the Unified Procurement Authority.

This integration eliminates the need for manual information exchange and facilitates the tracking of drug movement and inventory management, thereby enhancing transparency in the supply chain.

Benefits of Using Track and Trace Solution in the Pharmaceutical Field

  • Enhancing Patient Safety: Helps combat drug fraud, ensuring that patients receive legitimate medications.
  • Brand Protection: Enables companies to safeguard their brands and maintain their reputation.
  • Inventory Management: Provides insights into where medicines are available and identifies short supply situations, ensuring fair distribution.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Works in harmony with existing regulations and regulatory systems used by companies worldwide.
  • Supply Chain Monitoring: Allows for comprehensive oversight of the entire supply chain.
  •  Waste Reduction: Optimizes product use and minimizes waste in the distribution process.
